Complete set of 112 cards - check if you have them all!
× 4 colors = 25 cards/color × 4 = 100 colored cards
Have 2 minutes? Here's the fastest way:
Shuffle the entire UNO deck thoroughly 3-5 times. Make sure all cards are well mixed. The UNO deck consists of 108 cards in four colors for play + 4 spare (blank) cards = 112 cards in the box.
Each player draws one card from the top of the deck. If the deck runs out, shuffle the discarded cards and continue drawing.
Compare only number cards (0-9). Value 9 is highest, 0 is lowest. Players who drew action/special cards draw again.
The person with the highest number becomes the dealer for the first round. In case of a tie (same numbers), tied players draw again among themselves.
Each player rolls a die, highest roll deals. In case of a tie, repeat the rolls.
Classic game in pairs until a winner emerges. Quick and fair solution.
The youngest or oldest player deals the first hand. Simple and no drawing needed.
Starting the actual game after dealing cards
After dealing cards, flip the top card from the draw pile and place it next to it, creating the discard pile.
The game starts with the player to the left of the dealer. The order is always counter-clockwise.
Play a card of the same color or number
as the card on top of the discard pile
Same color (red)
Same number (1)
The starting player chooses the continuation color
Return to deck, draw a new starting card
First player draws 2 cards and loses their turn
Playing cards, drawing and key rules
If you have a suitable card in hand
Make the mandatory move
Draw 1 card from the draw pile
If the drawn card is playable, you can play it immediately
Otherwise you lose your turn
When a player wins a round, they get points for cards remaining in opponents' hands.
Face value
20 Points
Skip, Reverse, Draw 2
50 Points
Wild, Wild Draw 4, Wild Shuffle Hands, Wild Customizable
Keep a running total of each player's points from round to round. When a player reaches 500 points, they win the game.
First person without cards wins the round
The first player who got rid of all cards from their hand immediately wins the round.
The last card must be played according to the rules (matching color/number or special card).
For multi-round gameplay
The winning player collects all cards that other players hold in their hands.
Add all points to the winning player's total score.
Note: Score counting is optional. You can play in "each round is a separate win" mode or keep a full ranking over many rounds (usually to 500 points).
Official rules regarding +2, +4 and UNO! - all in one place
| Action / Rule | Home version (common practice) | Tournament version (official) |
|---|---|---|
| Putting +2 on +2 So-called "stacking" of cards |
Often allowed and practiced | STRICTLY PROHIBITED |
| Putting +4 on +4 Cumulating penalties |
Popular in unofficial games | STRICTLY PROHIBITED |
| Playing +4 with matching color Unauthorized use of card |
Often ignored or uncontrolled | DISQUALIFICATION (possibility to check hand) |
We reveal the truth about the biggest controversy in the UNO world
Stacking (accumulating) is a home rule that allows "adding" penalty cards on top of each other.
Example: Player A plays +2 → Player B has their own +2 and plays it instead of taking cards → Penalty grows to +4 for Player C.
MATTEL SAYS: NOT ALLOWED!
Mattel company (UNO owner) rules explicitly prohibit stacking +2 and +4 cards.
Suddenly 8 cards to take instead of 2 - adrenaline guaranteed!
"That's how my dad played, his dad and that's how I was taught in school"
Ability to defend against penalty gives sense of agency
Nothing pleases like "stacking" 8 cards on a friend!
Final penalty: 6 CARDS
Third player gets everything at once
Total: 6 CARDS
Each player gets 2 cards
In tournaments: Stacking is strictly prohibited. A player who tries to stack cards receives an immediate penalty of 2 additional cards.
At home with friends: It's up to you! The most important thing is to agree on rules before starting the game. If everyone likes stacking - play that way! If someone prefers official rules - respect that. Remember: UNO is supposed to be fun, not cause arguments.
Before you start a game, always ask: "Are we playing with stacking or without?"
Those 10 seconds of conversation can save an hour of great fun!
How to use action and special cards in practice
| Card | What does it do? | Point value | Expert tip |
|---|---|---|---|
Reverse |
Changes game direction (clockwise → counter-clockwise and vice versa) | 20 points | "Use strategically - especially when next player has few cards!" |
Skip |
Skips next player (they lose their turn) | 20 points | "Perfect against the leader - stop them before winning!" |
Draw Two (+2) |
Next player draws 2 cards and loses their turn | 20 points | "Officially cannot put +2 on +2 - remember that!" |
Wild (Choose color) |
Player chooses color to be continued | 50 points | "SAVE FOR THE END! It's your secret weapon to win." |
Wild Draw Four (+4) |
Player chooses color + next draws 4 cards and loses their turn | 50 points | "You can play ONLY when you don't have a card in the color on the table!" |
Answers to questions that bother most UNO players
Yes! In a 2-player game, the Reverse card works exactly the same as Skip.
Effect: Your opponent loses their turn, and you play again. This is a strategic card in a duel!
According to official Mattel rules:
Why? +4 at the start would give unfair advantage to the first player.
YES, that's the official rule!
If you don't have a playable card and must draw, and the drawn card matches the card on the table, you can play it immediately. Your turn doesn't end then - you continue playing.
YES, you always have the right to do so.
You can at any time ask any player: "How many cards do you have?" and the player must answer truthfully.
Order or voting decides.
In such situation:
Shuffle the discard pile and create a new draw pile.
Step-by-step procedure:
YES, that's a legal move!
Regular Wild card (Change color) can be played at ANY time, even if you have a card matching in color or number in your hand.
Depends on game version:
Fair play rule: Play at a pace comfortable for all participants.
Card stays - no taking back moves!
In UNO, the rule "card played - card played" applies. You cannot take back moves even if:
YES, color choice is mandatory.
Even if you know that the next player has a card that will protect them (e.g., Skip or Reverse), you must choose a color when playing Wild or Wild Draw Four card.
Strategy: Choose a color that is least beneficial for opponents, even if not directly for the next player.
If you suspect a player illegally played +4 (had matching color), you can challenge them. If they had matching color - they draw 4 cards. If they didn't - YOU draw 6 cards!
If Reverse is played on Reverse - game direction returns to previous. In 4-player game: A→B→C→D, C plays Reverse → B→A→D→C.
