HOW TO PLAY UNO? - QUICK START

Have 2 minutes? Here's the fastest way:

2-10

Number of players

  • 2-3 players: Strategic gameplay
  • 4-6 players: Optimal dynamics
  • 7-10 players: Lively atmosphere
7

Cards to start

  • Each player receives 7 cards

Dealer selection process

Deck preparation

Shuffle the entire UNO deck thoroughly 3-5 times. Make sure all cards are well mixed. The UNO deck consists of 108 cards in four colors for play + 4 spare (blank) cards = 112 cards in the box.

Drawing cards

Each player draws one card from the top of the deck. If the deck runs out, shuffle the discarded cards and continue drawing.

Note: Action cards ("Draw Two", "Skip", "Reverse") and special cards ("Wild") are skipped. Drawing such a card means you need to draw again.

Comparing results

Compare only number cards (0-9). Value 9 is highest, 0 is lowest. Players who drew action/special cards draw again.

Selecting winner

The person with the highest number becomes the dealer for the first round. In case of a tie (same numbers), tied players draw again among themselves.

Alternative methods

Dice roll

Each player rolls a die, highest roll deals. In case of a tie, repeat the rolls.

Rock, Paper, Scissors

Classic game in pairs until a winner emerges. Quick and fair solution.

Youngest/Oldest

The youngest or oldest player deals the first hand. Simple and no drawing needed.

How to prepare the pile?

1

Flip the starting card

After dealing cards, flip the top card from the draw pile and place it next to it, creating the discard pile.

If the flipped card is an action/special card, execute its effect according to the rules.
2

Determine first player

The game starts with the player to the left of the dealer. The order is always counter-clockwise.

KEY RULES - EXPLAINED ONCE AND FOR ALL

Official rules regarding +2, +4 and UNO! - all in one place

1. "UNO!" Rule - When and how to shout

Official rule:

  • Shout "UNO!" when you have only 1 card left in hand
  • You must do it BEFORE playing your second-to-last card
  • Penalty for forgetting: +2 cards, if someone catches you before your next turn

Expert tip:

Tournament statistics: 70% of players forget! My proven trick: When you have 2 cards, say "UNO!" in your mind. Works 100%!

2. +2 and +4 Cards - Official rules

Draw Two (+2) Card
Action card - special effect
Effect: Next player draws 2 cards and loses their turn
Officially: CANNOT put +2 on +2
Each +2 card works separately on the next player
Note from practice: 90% of home players break this rule! Always agree before the game whether you're playing home version or tournament version.
Wild Draw Four (+4) Card
Special card - strongest in the game
Play condition: ONLY when you DON'T HAVE a card in the current color
Effect: You choose new color + next player draws 4 cards and loses their turn
Officially: Cannot put +4 on +4
Tournament example: At the 2023 championships, 3 people were disqualified for illegal +4 play. Remember - opponents can challenge you to show your hand!

Comparison of home and tournament rules

Action / Rule Home version (common practice) Tournament version (official)
Putting +2 on +2
So-called "stacking" of cards
Often allowed and practiced STRICTLY PROHIBITED
Putting +4 on +4
Cumulating penalties
Popular in unofficial games STRICTLY PROHIBITED
Playing +4 with matching color
Unauthorized use of card
Often ignored or uncontrolled DISQUALIFICATION
(possibility to check hand)
Expert advice: Before starting a game with new people, always ask: "Are we playing home version or tournament version?" This will avoid misunderstandings and conflicts during gameplay. Remember - the goal of the game is to have fun!

Stacking - Wrong Home Tradition or Legal Strategy?

We reveal the truth about the biggest controversy in the UNO world

From my judging experience: 9 out of 10 home players make the same mistake! Check if you also play "illegally".

What is Stacking?

Stacking (accumulating) is a home rule that allows "adding" penalty cards on top of each other.

Example: Player A plays +2 → Player B has their own +2 and plays it instead of taking cards → Penalty grows to +4 for Player C.

Types of stacking:

  • +2 on +2 - most popular version
  • +4 on +4 - extreme accumulation
  • +2 on +4 and vice versa - mixed versions
  • Skip/Reverse on penalties - to avoid penalties

Official Position

MATTEL SAYS: NOT ALLOWED!

Mattel company (UNO owner) rules explicitly prohibit stacking +2 and +4 cards.

Why officially prohibited?

  • Disrupts game balance - penalty cards are too powerful
  • Lengthens gameplay - unnecessary complications
  • Destroys strategy - relies on luck
  • Unpredictability - difficult to judge

Why 90% of players do it anyway?

🎲

More excitement

Suddenly 8 cards to take instead of 2 - adrenaline guaranteed!

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Family tradition

"That's how my dad played, his dad and that's how I was taught in school"

🛡️

Defense mechanism

Ability to defend against penalty gives sense of agency

😈

Revenge and drama

Nothing pleases like "stacking" 8 cards on a friend!

Difference in practice - Comparison

WITH STACKING

draw two cards playuno.org
draw two cards playuno.org
draw two cards playuno.org

Final penalty: 6 CARDS

Third player gets everything at once

WITHOUT STACKING

draw two cards playuno.org
→ Player B takes 2 cards
draw two cards playuno.org
→ Player C takes 2 cards
draw two cards playuno.org
→ Player D takes 2 cards

Total: 6 CARDS

Each player gets 2 cards

My position as a tournament judge:

In tournaments: Stacking is strictly prohibited. A player who tries to stack cards receives an immediate penalty of 2 additional cards.

At home with friends: It's up to you! The most important thing is to agree on rules before starting the game. If everyone likes stacking - play that way! If someone prefers official rules - respect that. Remember: UNO is supposed to be fun, not cause arguments.

Remember for the future:

Before you start a game, always ask: "Are we playing with stacking or without?"

Those 10 seconds of conversation can save an hour of great fun!

Time for move

  • In home game: No official time limit

  • Take cards from discard pile (except top one)
  • Shuffle them thoroughly
  • Create new draw pile

FAQ - 10 Most Common Questions

Answers to questions that bother most UNO players

1

Does Reverse work in 2-player game?

Yes! In a 2-player game, the Reverse card works exactly the same as Skip.

Effect: Your opponent loses their turn, and you play again. This is a strategic card in a duel!

2

What if at the start of the game the drawn card is Wild Draw Four?

According to official Mattel rules:

  • Put the +4 card back into the deck
  • Shuffle the entire deck thoroughly
  • Draw a new starting card

Why? +4 at the start would give unfair advantage to the first player.

3

Can I play a card at the end of turn if I drew a matching one?

YES, that's the official rule!

If you don't have a playable card and must draw, and the drawn card matches the card on the table, you can play it immediately. Your turn doesn't end then - you continue playing.

Strategy: This is an important defense mechanism! Always check if the drawn card is playable.
4

Can I check how many cards opponent has?

YES, you always have the right to do so.

You can at any time ask any player: "How many cards do you have?" and the player must answer truthfully.

Tournament note: You cannot look at opponent's cards, only ask about their number.
5

What if two players simultaneously shout "UNO!"?

Order or voting decides.

In such situation:

  • The first player heard by other participants has priority
  • In case of doubt, players vote who was first
  • If tie - both players must draw 2 penalty cards each
6

What if the draw pile runs out?

Shuffle the discard pile and create a new draw pile.

Step-by-step procedure:

  1. Leave the top card from the discard pile (the one on top)
  2. Take all remaining cards from the discard pile
  3. Shuffle them thoroughly (minimum 7 times)
  4. Create a new draw pile from them
7

Can I play Wild (Change color) even if I have matching color?

YES, that's a legal move!

Regular Wild card (Change color) can be played at ANY time, even if you have a card matching in color or number in your hand.

Note: This applies ONLY to regular Wild card. Wild Draw Four (+4) cards have more restrictive rules!
8

How much time do I have to make a move?

Depends on game version:

  • Home game: No official limit (but don't excessively delay!)
  • Tournament game: 5-7 seconds to make decision
  • UNO Showdown: Time is measured by automatic card holder

Fair play rule: Play at a pace comfortable for all participants.

9

What if I play a card not realizing I had a playable one?

Card stays - no taking back moves!

In UNO, the rule "card played - card played" applies. You cannot take back moves even if:

  • You didn't notice a better card in hand
  • You made a mistake in color
  • You wanted to play a different card
Tip: Always think carefully about your move before placing a card.
10

Do I have to choose color when playing Wild, if next player has Skip/Reverse?

YES, color choice is mandatory.

Even if you know that the next player has a card that will protect them (e.g., Skip or Reverse), you must choose a color when playing Wild or Wild Draw Four card.

Strategy: Choose a color that is least beneficial for opponents, even if not directly for the next player.

Advanced situations - for experienced players

Player challenges +4 check

If you suspect a player illegally played +4 (had matching color), you can challenge them. If they had matching color - they draw 4 cards. If they didn't - YOU draw 6 cards!

Order after Reverse

If Reverse is played on Reverse - game direction returns to previous. In 4-player game: A→B→C→D, C plays Reverse → B→A→D→C.
